The record breaking Berbice Cricket Season continues to expand even as the year 2018 comes to an end. The very vibrant Berbice Cricket Board has to date successfully completed a record twenty two cricket tournaments, while the New Building Society 40-Overs, 2019 Under-15, Mogu Mogu Region 5, Upper Corentyne Under-19, Ivan Madray 100 Balls are currently in progress. The Board today would start its 28th Cricket Tournament for the year, with the launching of the BCB/RHTYSC Champion of Champions 40-Overs Tournament.
The fifteenth Edition of the Tournament would be contested by eight teams. The top eight teams were selected based on their performances in 2018 and they are West Berbice Cricket Association, Blairmont Community Centre Cricket Club, Tucber Park Cricket Club, Rose Hall Canje Cricket Club, Young Warriors Cricket Club, Rose Hall Town Gizmos & Gadgets Cricket Team, Albion Community Centre Cricket Club and Port Mourant Cricket Club. Upper Corentyne was originally chosen but was eventually left out as the Berbice Cricket Board strives to complete the New Building Society Second Division in the sub-association. They were replaced by the Rose Hall Canje Cricket Club.
The Guyana Beverage Company is sponsoring the tournament under its Busta brand and has been doing so since 2004. Guyana’s leading youth and sports organisation, the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club, MS has organised the tournament over the years and this year has joined forces with the Berbice Cricket Board to host the prestigious tournament. Over the years the tournament has developed into Berbice most popular cricket tournament and has played a major role in the development of players like Devendra Bishoo, Brandon Bess, Veerasammy Permaul, Assad Fudadin, Royston Crandon, Narsingh Deonarine, Romario Shepherd and Keon Joseph among others.
The opening round of matches today would see:
Albion Cricket Club vs West Berbice Cricket Club @ Albion
Young Warriors Cricket Club vs Port Mourant Cricket club @ Port Mourant
Tucber Park Cricket Club vs Blairmont Com Centre @ Cumberland
Rose Hall Town Gizmos & Gadgets vs Upper Corentyne Cricket Club @ Area ‘H’ Ground
Albion Com Centre would be spearheaded by Jonathan Foo, Sharaz Ramcharran, Kandasammy Surujnarine and Adrian Sukhwa, while West Berbice would depend heavily on Arthley Bailey, Keith Fraser, Sherwin McPherson and Steffan Adams. Rose Hall Town Gizmos & Gadgets challenge would be led by skipper Shawn Pereira, Kevin Sinclair, Eon Hooper, Sylus Tyndall, Junior Sinclair and Keith Simpson against Rose Hall Canje Team spearheaded by Ameer Rahaman, Mark Sampson, Martin Singh, Sasenarine Sukhu and Isaiah Thorne.
On paper the Young Warriors Cricket Club and Port Mourant Cricket Club match would be a thriller with Young Warriors Cricket Club having players like Alex Algoo, Vishal Mohabir, Linden Austin, Trevlon Stanislaus, Suresh Dhanai and Seon Hetmyer, older brother of Shimron Hetmyer. Port Mourant Cricket Club challenge against Young Warriors would be led by Joshua Ramsammy, Loyydel Lewis, Samuel Kistasammy, Dimitri Cameron and Kellon Carmichael. The final match should also produce good cricket with Garfield Benjamin, Nial Smith, Leon Swammy, Mark Barker, Clifton Lindie and Kewsi Mickle appearing for Tucber Park against Blairmont which would feature Javed Karim, Kevin Jawahir, Seon Glasgow, Nigel Deodat and Fawaz Gafoor. All of the matches bowl off at 09.35 hours sharp.
The Berbice Cricket Board and Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club, MS would like to express profound gratitude to the Management and Staff of the Guyana Beverage Company for their continued support of Berbice Cricket. Special mention must be made of long serving General Manager Robert Selman.
