Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan yesterday fined a farmer $70,000 or in default four weeks’ imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to trafficking 35 grams of narcotics.
Edward Bacchus, 60, a farmer of Soesdyke/ Linden Highway appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court where the charge was read to him.
He pleaded guilty and explained that on December 5, 2018, he had in his possession 35 grams of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.
Bacchus in his explanation to the court stated, “I does smoke ganja one and two time and I does make medicine to strengthen men back.”
Facts presented by Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield stated that on the day in question, ranks from the Mackenzie Police Station, acting on information went to the defendant’s home.
The court heard when the defendant saw the officers he began running and he dropped a bulky plastic bag which he had in his possession. The officers quickly apprehended the defendant and retrieved the bag which was opened in his presence.
He was then arrested and told of the offence. “Officers I does use the weed on and off and I does mek medicine.”
The Magistrate after listening to the prosecutor facts fined Bacchus $70,000 or in default four months’ imprisonment.
