A tearful police constable who is attached to the Brickdam Police Station was yesterday released on $100,000 bail after being slapped with a charge of possession of illegal ammunition.
Thirty-year-old Romel Cato appeared before Senior Magistrate Faith McGusty in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
It is alleged that on December 1, 2018, at Brickdam, Georgetown, Cato had in his possession 18 rounds of .223 ammunition when he was not a licensed firearm holder.
It was further alleged that on the same day and at the same location, he had in his possession one .38 ammunition when he was not a licensed firearm holder.
Cato denied both charges after they were read to him by the Magistrate.
Police Prosecutor Seon Blackman objected to bail being granted to Cato, citing the prevalence of the offence and the penalty the charge attracts.
A weeping Cato, upon hearing the prosecutor’s objection, turned to his mother who was seated in court and said, “Mom, go call the lawyer before I get remand.”
According to information, ranks from the Brickdam Police Station acting on information carried out a search in Cato’s room, where the ammunition was allegedly found in a cupboard. Cato was arrested and told of the offence, to which he denied.
Magistrate McGusty after listening to Prosecutor Blackman released Cato on $100,000 bail. He was instructed to make his next court appearance on December 14 before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan for reassignment.
