The Berbice Cricket Board on Sunday completed its 21st Cricket Tournament for 2018 when it hosted the Pepsi 50-Overs Final at the Albion Cricket Ground under lights. The powerful Rose Hall Town Gizmos & Gadgets Team under the inspirational leadership of Shawn Pereira claimed their third major Title for the year when they crushed Young Warriors Cricket Club by a massive 202 runs infront of a fair sized crowd. The Tournament was sponsored by the Demerara Distillers Ltd under the International Brand “Pepsi”.
Rose Hall Town Gizmos & Gadgets won the toss and elected to bat. They were given a brisk start of 59 from 7.3 overs before left arm spinner Trevlon Stanislaus, who played for Berbice at the Under-19 level, trapped National Under-19 player Junior Sinclair for 20. Fellow opener Kevin Sinclair and the promising Kevlon Anderson then added 161 for the second wicket with Sinclair smashing a brilliant 130, which included sixteen boundaries and two massive sixes. Anderson continued his rich run of form with a classy 76 (5 boundaries). National Senior Player Clinton Pestano blasted a quick fire 60 (5×4, 5×6) as Rose Hall Town Gizmos & Gadgets were bowled out for 319 runs in their full 50-Overs.
Medium pacer Suresh Dhanai took 2 for 64, while Trevlon Stanislaus took 3 for 62. Needing to score 320 runs from 50-Overs, Young Warriors Cricket Club lost Vishal Mohabir without a run to his name when he was brilliantly caught and bowled by former National offspinner Eon Hooper. The Rose Hall Town Gizmos & Gadgets bowlers never released the pressure and Young Warriors Cricket Club struggled to 116 all out from 38 Overs. Linden Austin, a former Guyana Under-19 all rounder, top scored with 24 while Stanislaus returned with the bat to score 21. Rose Hall Town Gizmos & Gadgets Captain Shawn Pereira continued his excellent season with 3 wickets for 23 runs from 10 Overs, while Eon Hooper 2 for 19 (10 Overs) and Kevlon Anderson 2 for 05 supported well in a brilliant all round bowling performances by the Rose Hall Town Gizmos & Gadgets attack.
BCB President Hilbert Foster at the presentation ceremony expressed gratitude to DDL and Pepsi for their investment into Berbice Cricket. Foster hailed the contribution of Marketing Executive Larry Wills for his support and former West Indies Captain Ramnaresh Sarwan for the role he played in obtaining the sponsorship deal. Foster stated that
Berbice Cricket was enjoying the most progressive period of its 79 years history and that the county plays more cricket than the rest of Guyana combined. Captains Shawn Pereira and Seon Hetmyer both congratulated the Berbice Cricket Board on the outstanding work it was doing to promote the game in Berbice. Hetmyer stated that Young Warriors Cricket Club was proud to be part of the Finals but that Rose Hall Town Gizmos & Gadgets was a stronger team. The Young Warriors Cricket Club was only recently reformed after being dormant for a while. The winning team collected $100,000 and a trophy and the runner-up carried home $50,000 and trophy. Kevin Sinclair was named Man of the Final for his brilliant 130 and 1 for 31 from seven over.
