Police on the Essequibo Coast are trying to piece together the puzzling case behind a torched safe within the Charity Post Office.
Based on reports reaching this publication, some $2 million is now missing from the Charity Post Office following a break in some time yesterday morning.
The post mistress of the Charity Post office discovered yesterday morning, that the combination lock of a safe which secured some $2.3 million was torched; and the cash missing. Reports indicate that the missing money was to be paid to pensioners within the area during this week.
This publication understands that on Thursday, the post mistress collected $3 million from the Anna Regina Post Office. The money was then placed into the safe, which was secured by a combination lock. On Friday about 16:20 hours the post mistress claimed that she last counted the money, which amounted to $2.3 million.
The money was again locked and secured in the safe. The safe intern was secured in the post office; a dilapidated building located just behind the Charity Police Station.
Kaieteur News understands that the post office has two entrances. One of the entrances, which is located on the southern side, is a two half wooden door, which is being secured by means of tower bolts internally.
The western entrance on the other hand is secured by hasps and staples, with an external padlock.
Around the post office are several glass windows with wooden frames, reinforced with internal grill works. It is believed that the perpetrator/s gained entry to the building after removing the grill works from a window on the eastern side of the building.
The perpetrator/s then proceeded to torch the combination safe, grabbed the cash and made good their escape.
It was related to this publication that no security was stationed at the Post Office during the break in. When contacted, the police claim that knowledge of the money’s existence rested only between the three staff members of the post office.
Police further believe that money of such value should not have been kept in such a deteriorated building for security purposes. There are no prime suspects at this time, but investigations into the break-in continue.
