The new mayor and deputy mayor to serve the Anna Regina Municipality were yesterday sworn in by clerk of the Anna Regina Town Council Ms. D. N. Critchlow.
During the ceremony, which was conducted in the Board Room of the Anna Regina Town Council, 14 persons from the People’s Progressive Party Civic were sworn in as councillors to serve on the 15-seat council.
A Partnership for National Unity secured one seat, with Darul Hakim Khan being sworn in as councillor.
Pastor Rajendra Lall Prabhulall, who lives in Walton Hall on the Essequibo Coast was sworn in as the new mayor, while Mr. Rudolph Williams was sworn in as the Deputy Mayor.
While delivering brief remarks, Prabhulall said that the council will work in its best capacity towards the development and transformation of Anna Regina.
He added, “We expect that every councillor will work so that when there is a statutory meeting you can represent your people… Councillors with new ideas can bring up their new ideas so we can work together. I am here to work with all people and we want to involve all in everything we do here in this town council.”
Meanwhile, Williams said that his swearing in was a historic occasion, noting that a person of Amerindian descent was for the first time elected to serve as Deputy Mayor in the Anna Regina Township.
Williams assuredly stated that the new council will work on the foundation that has been laid by their predecessors. He added, “We have challenging and perhaps exciting times as we work towards the development of this town…We are going to build and work on it and we are going to do all our best so that we can mark this town as one of the leading towns in the entire country. For us to achieve those goals, we would have to work together. All of us are involved.”
The new council will sit next year, after the new mayor and deputy mayor are sworn in in the presence of the President.
