District 10 Upper Demerara Kwakwani chalked up 66 points to successfully defend their National Schools’ cycling, swimming and track and field title when the championships concluded last night at the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora, West Coast Demerara.
District 11 North Georgetown and District 13 South Georgetown were tied in second place with 54 points each followed by District three Essequibo Islands West Demerara on 50, District 12 East Georgetown 47, District six Corentyne 46 and District 15 New Amsterdam 44, District four East Coast Demerara 42, District seven Bartica 39, District 14 East Bank Demerara and District five West Coast Berbice on 34 each, District one North West 32, District two Essequibo Coast and Pomeroon 28, District nine Rupununi 20 and District eight Potaro/Siparuni 19.
District 13 won the U14 1500m medley relay ahead of District 10 and District nine in that order, while the girls 800m U14 medley relay was taken by District 14, while District five placed second and District three third.
Ian Dooker of District 12 claimed gold in the boys U20 400m while Okemi Porter of District took silver. Analisa Redmond of District 13 captured the girls U20 400m title; Donelle Matheson of District five finished second and Leona James of District 10 third.
The girls U18 400m was taken by Dashanna Skeete of District 10 in 57.73 seconds, while Jasmine Assanah of District 12 placed second and Eliza Evans of District four third.
Dejuan Grant of District four won the boys U12 400m, while District three won the female teachers 4x100m relay as well as the male 4x100m male teachers relay; District 13 claimed second place and District 11 was third.
The final races of the championships, which were the boys and girls U20 4x100m relay, were marred by some controversy as athletes took to the track during the third leg of the girls’ category which resulted in the race having to be re-started and also caused a delay to start in the boys segment.
However, District three foursome of Keiara Duncan, Tonya Rawlins, Bika Joseph and Keliza Smith won the gold in the girls division ahead of District 10 and District 12 respectively.
The boys’ category was taken by District 10, while District four placed second and District 13 third.
