Shane Haynes and Tonya Rawlins proved their worth once again in the sprints as they both grabbed gold medals in the Boys and Girls U20 200m when the National Schools’ Track and Field Championships continued yesterday at the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora.
Haynes of District 10 – Upper Demerara Kwakwani who won the Boys U20 100m on Wednesday, overpowered his rivals once again to take another gold in the 200m while Alwyn Prince of District 4 – East Coast Demerara took the silver and Anthony Griffith of District 11 – North Georgetown claimed silver.
Having won the Girls U20 100m on Wednesday, Rawlins of District 3 – Essequibo Islands/West Demerara blazed the track to win the 200m ahead of Analissa Redmond of District 13 – South Georgetown and Leona James of District 10, in that order.

clocking 22.36 seconds to win the Boys U18 200m; he also won the 100m. Gladwin Humphrey of District 5 – West Coast Berbice finished second and Daniel Benjamin of District 11, third.
Dishana Skeete of District 10 who also won the 100m, sprinted to glory yet again as she crossed the finish line in the Girls U18 200m ahead of Aaliyah Kelman of District 14 – East Bank Demerara and Bika Joseph of District 3, respectively.
The 200m Boys U16 was taken by Osrick Pellew of District 4 – East Coast Demerara while Tyndall Wesley of District 11 placed second and Richard Blake of District three, third. Brianna Charles of District 11 took the top podium spot in the 200m Girls U16 event while Keliza Smith of District 3 took the silver and Princess Browne of District 12 – East Georgetown claimed the bronze.
The 200m Boys U14 was won by David Higgins of District 12; Shaquan
Nelson of District 3 took second place and Shane Calistro of District one North West was third. Odessa France of District 14 won the Girls equivalent while Putrina Sullivan of District 6 – Corentyne finished second and Donna Lowe of District 13 South Georgetown, third.
Matthew Gordon of District 5 won the 1500m Boys U16 race in 4 minutes 18.42 seconds while Cordel Charles of District 12 placed second in 4.24:64 and Rajan Ramdeholl of District 10 third in 4.27:59.
Shaquka Tyrell of District 10 claimed the 1500m Girls U16 in 5.10:10 ahead of Adriel Austin of District 11 in 5.11:00 and Leah Harris of District 1 in 5.22:60. The 1500m Boys U14 was taken by Matrim Martin of District 9 – Rupununi; Jonathan Seedath of District 4 placed second and Samuel Henry of District 5, third.
Attoya Harvey of District 3 captured the 1500m Girls U14 title while Vanita Francis of District 9 finished second and Michelle Robinson of District 10, third. Joshua Toppell of District 4 set a new record in the Shot Putt Boys U18 with 12.67m, erasing the old record of 12.29m.
Tiana Springer of District 12 leaped to a new record in the Long Jump Girls U12 clearing 4.18m; the previous best was 4.12m. Marvin Williams of District 10 inked his name in the record books in the long jump boys U12 as he leaped 4.59m, erasing the old record of 4.55m. Dewan Grant of District 4 set a new record in the High Jump Boys U12 achieving 141m; the previous best was 1.39m.
District 10 took a sizeable lead as they chalked up 357 points so far followed by District 3 on 249 and District 4 on 228.5. The championships conclude today.
