The five men who were on trial at the Mibicuri Magistrate’s Court for the murder of Pawan Chandradeo, his 15-year-old son, Jaikarran Chandradeo, and his brother-in-law Naresh Rooplall, are set to face a judge and jury at the Berbice High Court after the matter was committed by the Magistrate Charlyne Artiga, yesterday.
They were all represented by Attorney-at-law Mursalene Bacchus. Prosecuting the case was Inspector Phillip Sheriff.
The men, Catchew Chetram, 63; Rakesh Karamchand, 40; of Lot 2 Sheet Anchor, New Amsterdam, Berbice; Carlton Chetram, 38; his son Jairam Chetram, 18; and with Tameshwar Jagmohan, 26, all farmers of Mahaicony where dragged before the court after they were arrested for the murder of the two men and the teenager.
Chandradeo, his son and Rooplall were discovered at Cookrit Savannah, Black Bush Polder by a farmer with gunshot wounds to the head on July 22, 2016. They had set out the previous day to fish. Chandradeo had taken his other son who was 11-years-old at the time with them.
They however left the young Chandradeo some distance away near a hut while they ventured out to fish.
The child reportedly heard gunshots some time after but was unaware that it was his father, brother and uncle were the ones that were shot. The Major Crimes Unit with the support of ranks of B Division cracked the case and apprehended the suspects at the time.
Investigations revealed that the victims witnessed the accused stealing fuel from a rice farmer in the backlands. This led to them being brutally murdered.
An autopsy revealed that Pawan Chandradeo sustained a laceration to his head, resulting in a fractured skull and he subsequently died of shock and haemorrhage. His son, Jaikarran, and his brother-in-law, Rooplall, also died of shock and haemorrhage.
