The four persons who were charged and placed before the court for the murder of Tain Domestic Worker murder, Leelawattie Mohamed, were all committed to stand trial in Berbice High Court yesterday by Magistrate Charlyn Artiga.
Oliver Permaul and his wife, Nazeema Permaul, were both represented by Attorney-at-law Mursalene Bacchus; Andre James was represented by Attorney Bernard De Santos; and Rohan Johnson called “Jamakie” was represented by Attorney Motie Singh.
They were committed after a prima facie case was made out against them on September 25, last. On that said date, the woman who was accused of being the mastermind of the murder, Indira Outar, had her case discharged after her attorney Bacchus stated that there was no evidence to support that she was involved in Mohamed’s death.
Sabiki Thompson Alert, the girlfriend of Rohan Johnson of Rose Hall Town who was also charged for the murder was also discharged.
On the evening of February 7, 2017, three men, one armed with a loaded gun, stormed the home of Leelawattie Mohamed who was 45 years old at the time. She lived with her two children in a small two-bedroom wooden house at Tain Village, Corentyne, Berbice. The men were clad in black clothing and reportedly demanded cash from her.
Her son, Ashad Ishack, told Kaieteur News that he was at home with his mother and sister when he heard someone kicking on the front door, in a matter of minutes the men had kicked open the very door and barged in.
They ordered them to lie on the floor, Ishack recounted. He said that one of the men held his mother by her hair and asked, “Where the money deh”. She told them that she had no money.
The armed man then pointed the gun to his mother’s throat and shot her. The killers escaped through the front door they kicked open, fired a shot in the air, scaled the fence and ran to the Tain backlands.
The then Commander of the Division, Ian Amsterdam, who was actively involved in bringing justice to the family of Mohamed, had told this publication that based on their investigations, the Domestic Worker was executed by a Jamaican and his Guyanese associate.
They were allegedly hired by the businesswoman who was furious that Mohamed and her husband were allegedly having an affair. Initial reports had stated that the businesswoman had found out about her husband’s extra marital affair with Mohamed and in a fit of rage and jealousy, conjured up a plan with the help of Oliver Permaul, his wife Nazeema Permaul, Andre James, Rohan Johnson (the Jamaican) and allegedly Shabiki Thompson Alert to kill her.
The Jamaican had admitted to investigators then that he was the one that pulled the trigger and a hefty sum of $4 Million was promised by the businesswoman to execute the killing.
However, only $400,000 was reportedly advanced to him and the Permauls.
The former Commander had relayed that there was surveillance footage showing the businesswoman meeting with some of the accused at a hotel.
An autopsy that was done revealed that Mohamed died from shock and haemorrhage due to a gunshot wound, laceration to the brain and a fractured skull.
