A 23-year-old mother is in police custody assisting with investigation after she showed up to collect her nine-month-old baby, who was found abandoned in front of a police station.
The young child was discovered wrapped in a blanket without any clothing by Constable 21282 Kevin Morgan, upon opening the Baramita Police Station door yesterday.
“The unusual discovery by the hinterland policeman, caused him to promptly take the smiling child into his arms, cuddled it and after a warm bath the beautiful baby slept for a while,” a recent press release by police stated.
The Subordinate Officer-in-Charge of the Station, Corporal 15421 Jennifer Griffith, and other ranks reportedly pooled their resources and purchased clothing and pampers for the “miracle baby.”
The baby was then taken for medical examination at the Baramita Health Centre, where he remains at this time, in good condition.
It was reported that officers joined with concerned residents in an attempt to locate the parents of the child, however, this proved futile.
However, police reported that around 13:15 hrs, a 23-year-old Central Baramita resident showed up at the Station and explained to the peace officers that she left her child in the care of someone on Wednesday night last because she ( the mother) was intoxicated.
The young mother told ranks that she cannot recall who the person was to whom she entrusted with her young child.
The young lady reportedly first went to the Health Centre and saw her child before going to the police Station. She remains in police custody assisting with the investigation.
