Sitting at the helm of the Bartica Town Council, newly re-elected Mayor Gifford Marshall, will be pushing to ensure that Government’s plan to make Bartica a model Green Town is realized.
In a recent interview with Kaieteur News, Marshall highlighted the need for programmes which will aid in sensitizing residents on the direction the Council towards achieving this goal.
The government has been pushing for Bartica to become the model Green Town under the Transitioning to National Energy Security (TNES) project.
The project is designed to gather important data on energy use in Bartica, which will be used to inform evidence-based decision-making for the future implementation of projects and programmes. Bartica is expected to be the blueprint for other towns and countries to replicate.
Mayor Marshall has said that Bartica is committed to its role as a model green town.
“The municipality of Bartica is committed to, not only establishing ‘green’ projects and ‘green’ ideas and moving the concept forward within the township, but we are also committed to sharing our ideas and ideals with the rest of Guyana,” he said.
“This project will lay the foundation for right decisions going forward…Bartica is one of the most beautiful towns in Guyana and we need to preserve that environment.
“We want to set the pace. We want to ensure that whatever is done there is done in an environmentally friendly matter,” Marshall told a recent forum on Green Energy.
To achieve this objective, the Mayor noted however that there must be a number of sensitization programmes.
“Our objective is ensuring that residents of Bartica understand their role in making us the model Green Town. Also Bartica is quite new to the township so it’s important that the people understand the role of the Council and their role in the development of the community.”
Mayor Marshall noted the need for capacity building training for new councilors, from the 2016 elections, only four persons returned to the Council.
“So we have almost an entirely new Council. A number of persons would have benefited from capacity training and have a better understanding of the local government system. So going forward, we anticipate that we will see increased development in Bartica.”
Additionally, over the last two years we have learned a lot and of course we didn’t make all the right decisions; but this time around we are in a much better position to government,” Marshall added
Following the Local Government Elections, the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) secured 12 seats, the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) –five seats, and the Alliance For Change (AFC) – one seat.
Moving forward, the Mayor stressed the importance of co-operation in making the work of the Council easier and more successful.
“At the Bartica Council, we should not see each other as opponents but as individual representing the people in the various constituencies.”
“We believe that the development of the country starts with the people at the local level and I commend Minister Bulkan and his government for ensuring these elections is held. It will only serve to strengthen our democracy and make us a better nation,” Marshall added.
