A new City Mayor is expected to be installed today following an election by the Georgetown Mayor and City Councillors (M&CC).
The selection of the Chief Citizen will take place following a vote by constituency representatives starting at 10:00 am today.
In the wake of the 2016 Local Government Elections, the Georgetown M&CC operated under the stewardship of Mayor Patricia Chase-Green.
Over the past two years Chase-Green‘s management of the APNU-dominated City Council attracted sharp criticisms from citizens.
As such, well-placed sources have indicated that Chase-Green is not likely to return as Mayor.
Instead, sources have indicated that the ruling party will be shaking things up by taking a more fresh and youthful approach to local governance.
As part of the strategy, the source explained that party is looking for a new Mayor who will have to be someone to represent that.
The source noted, too, that although she will not return as Mayor, Chase-Green remains a strong member of the party and she will have a big role at the Council.
“However the two top positions must represent a new start,” a source added.
Meanwhile Kaieteur News understands that first past the post winner for Constituency #1 in the Georgetown Local Government area, Pandit Ubraj Narine, is among the possible candidates being considered as a replacement for Patricia Chase-Green for City Mayor.
The new Mayoral Candidate, Pandit Narine is the grandson of PNC/ R Member of Parliament for the People’s National Congress, Preetam Singh.
Another candidate being considered for the top post in the Council is first time candidate who contested under the APNU, Denroy Tudor.
Following the recently held elections, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) regained control of Georgetown, despite losing ground to the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) at the Local Government Elections (LGE).
Party chairperson and Minister of Public Health, Volda Lawrence, noted that the PNC/R, the largest party in the APNU, secured 21 seats on the 30-member council; PPP, seven seats; and Alliance for Change (AFC), two seats.
Lawrence had noted that there are no formal discussions on whether the party has plans to have Chase-Green, who won her Constituency comprehensively, re-elected Mayor.
