Dorado Speed Swim Club’s (DSSC) athletes have continued the tradition of excellence at the just-concluded Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) National Short Course Championships held at the National Aquatic Centre.
The Meet saw several of the club’s swimmers registering top times in their respective age groups while numerous Personal Best Times were also set over the four day competition (Nov. 15-18). Among the top performers was Daniel Scott in the Boys 15-17 age group who, apart from winning all ten (10) of his events, also set age group Top Times in the 400m and 800m freestyle – lowering the times set by Hannibal Gaskin of 4:23.67 and 9:21.44 to 4:23.28 and 9:14.22.
Scott also lowered the previous Top Time held by Henk Lowe in the 1500m freestyle from 19:10.01 to 18:10.65 and ended the championship on a strong note on the final day by lowering Ronaldo Rodrigues’ 400m Individual Medley (IM) time of 5:27.88 to 5:14.39.
The 11-12 age group saw DSSC’s swimmers taking an almost complete stranglehold on the top spot for all the Boys events with exception coming in the 50m Breaststroke which was won by Nathan Jackson of Orca Swim Club.
The boys shared honours with Raekwon Noel taking the titles in the 50m and 100m Backstroke; the 400m, 800m and 1500m Freestyle; the 50m and 100m Butterfly as well as the 200m Individual Medley.
Ethan Gonsalves took the titles for the 50m, 100m and 200m Freestyle; 100m and 200m Breaststroke as well as the 200m Butterfly. Vladimir Woodroffe won the 200m Backstroke with a time of 2:46.89 while Elliot Gonsalves placed second in a time of 2:58.42.
For the females, Monique Watson took the titles for the 200m Backstroke (2:45.08); the 200m Butterfly (3:21.22) and the 200m Breaststroke (3:14.34) events. Monique also registered Age Group Top Times with her victories in the 200m Breaststroke and Backstroke events, lowering the previous times set by Athena Gaskin of 3:22.01 and Soroya Simmons of 2:51.48 respectively.
Raekwon Noel erased the Boys 11-12 1500m Freestyle Top Time which was previously held by Travis Henry of Dolphin Speed Swim Club of 21:43.64 with a new mark of 19:46.06. The previous mark had stood for 9 years.
Noel also registered Top Times in the 50m (31.50) and 100m Backstroke (1:10.00); the 400m Freestyle (2:42.60) and the 200m IM (2:30.94). Ethan Gonsalves also set an age group Top Time in the 100m Breaststroke with 2:57.62, erasing the 11 year old mark of 3:07.02 set by Ronaldo Rodrigues.
Excellent performances were also registered by Zara Crane in the Girls’ 9-10 age group as she took the titles in the 100m Butterfly (1:39.28); 100m Backstroke (1:33.41); 200m Freestyle (2:56.49) and the 200m IM (3:17.52).
Donna Carter and Safiya Foster also copped medals in the Girls 13-14 and 15-17 age groups respectively with the former winning the 50m, 100m and 200m Backstroke as well as the 100m Freestyle and the latter taking the 50m, 800m and 1500m Freestyle; 50m Butterfly and 50m Breaststroke titles.
The DSSC swimmers also made a clean sweep in the 11-12 Boys 400m IM exhibition event with Raekwon Noel finishing first in a time of 5:16.59, Ethan Gonsalves second (5:18.32), Vladimir Woodroffe third (5:51.45) and Elliot Gonsalves fourth (5:52.50). Monique Watson was the only female to contest the gruelling event, finishing in a time of 6:10.09.
The next event for the swimmers is the FINA-sanctioned Amateur Swimming Association of Trinidad & Tobago (ASATT) Invitational from December 13-16, next. There they will splash off their Long-Course season competing against some of the top swimmers in the Caribbean and even further afield.
