Day two of the Diamond Mineral Water (DMW) International Hockey Festival saw some of the visiting clubs from Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) taking to the plastic-tile court at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) for the first time while the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) hockey teams of Vintage (Over-35) and GBTI (women) maintained their 100% record after winning their second consecutive matches.
Yesterday’s opening game was an Over-35 Veteran’s clash in which Old Fort defeated T&T’s Carib Hockey Club 4-0. John Abrahams led his side with a hat-trick while Dwain Chan scored the other goal during the rout.
The Shandy Carib sponsored Magnolia avenged the twin-island republic loss with a sound 6-1 thrashing of Saints Hockey Club (SHC). Savannah Defreitas netted a hat-trick for Magnolia while her teammates Britney Hingh, Chelsea Dey and Shaniah DeFreitas scored one goal each.
Reigning national champions, Woodpecker Hikers women, dismal form continued in this five-day tournament after losing to Old Fort 3-1 on the opening night, they went down 0-5 to GBTI GCC last night. GCC’s skipper Sonia Jardine and striker Gabriella Jardine both netted braces while current Sportswoman of the Year, Marzana Fiedtkou, added the fifth.
Alan Fernandes bagged a hat-trick in Vintage’s second Veteran’s
group win where they got past Antonio’s Hickers 6-0. National Female Coach Dwayne Scott proved that he can both do the practical and theoretical with a brace in the win, Kevin Spencer added the sixth.
T&T’s Venture Hockey Club came from a goal down to defeat Old Fort Hockey Club (OFHC) 4-1. After going up early in the first half through Romichelle Brummel, OFHC defended resolutely with keeper Julia Gouviea pulling off some fantastic saves to keep the score at 1-0 at half-time.
However, Old Fort banged in four unanswered goals through Kristin Thompson with a brace, Amanda George and Jade Piper. In the Open Men’s division, Bounty GCC found success second time round after buckling to Hikers 5-4 in their opening clash on Wednesday.
Last evening, they needled the youthful unit of SHC through a Kareem MacKenzie field goal in the 10th minute. The tournament continues today and tomorrow with more round-robin matches; the semifinals and final are set for Sunday at the same venue.
