The busy cricket Season in the Ancient County of Berbice continued last weekend with the Tucber Park pair of Mark Barker and Nial Smith advancing to the semifinals of the historic Brian Ramphal Double Wicket Competition for First Division Clubs.
They defeated the Albion Community Centre ‘B’ pair of Gudakesh Motie and Karran Arjpaul at the Albion Community Centre where the home boys batted first and reached 48-1 from their allotted four overs.
Motie raced to 37 (5×4 2×6) as he took a special liking to the offspin of the burly Barker. Smith bowled with pace and aggression, his two overs costing a mere 3 runs. In reply, Smith tore into Motie as 20 runs flowed from the first over and then took another sixteen off him in the 3rd over to race to 50 without loss off 3.1 overs.
Smith was unbeaten on 36 while Barker struck a huge six and a boundary in his 12 not out; the duo have advanced to the semifinals where they would clash with the Rose Hall Town Gizmos & Gadgets ‘A’ pair of Clinton Pestano and Kevin Sinclair.
The Rose Hall Town Gizmos & Gadgets pair defeated the Blairmont Community Centre pair of Seon Glasgow and Derick Lalsa by 18 runs. Rose Hall Town Gizmos & Gadgets ‘A’ amassed 50-2 from their four overs with Pestano hitting an attractive 42 (3×4 4×6).
The Blairmont pair was restricted to 32 all out in 3.1 overs as Glasgow scored 24. The Albion Community Centre ‘A’ pair of Jonathan Foo and Kevin Umroa have advanced to the final.
The Tournament involves each pair batting four overs while each player would bowl two overs each. Each of the pair was supported in the field by six of their club mates.
The Double Wicket Tournament, the first of its kind to be organised by the Berbice Cricket Board is being sponsored by overseas based Guyanese Brian Rampha who earlier this year donated $1M and later over $200,000 in gear to the BCB.
The winning pair would receive $75 000, the 2nd place $40,000 and the 3rd place, $20,000.
