Wanneka Arrindel was on Wednesday reelected Mayor of Linden to thunderous applause and shouts from supporters of “Who God Bless No man curse”. The voting took place at the Linden Mayor and Town Council Conference room which was packed to capacity.
The nominations were done by secret ballot, after a motion was moved by Councillor Fern McCoy, and seconded by a few other Councillors.
Arrindel secured nine of the sixteen votes cast.
She later cast the deciding ballot, which gave Wainwright Bethune the opportunity to return as her Deputy, after there was a tie with another APNU Councillor, Monica Hackshaw, who was also contending for the position.
The Mayor said that it was a privilege to serve again. She expressed gratitude on her reelection.
She pointed out that the first statutory meeting for the new Council will take place in February.
Several hailed the reelection as a step in the right direction, and expressed optimism that development will continue with the two at the helm of the Linden Mayor and Town Council.
The Mayor heads a 16-member Council who were sworn in shortly before her reelection.
Among those in attendance were Minister within the Ministry of Housing Valerie Adams- Yearwood, Regional Chairman Rennis Morian, former Mayors Stanley Smith and Carwyn Holland and Commander of E Division, Linden Lord.
Most expressed satisfaction with the results. They contended that the Mayor needed another term to accomplish some of the projects undertaken and those still to be put on stream.
RDC Councillor Charles Sampson said that he is happy that both the Mayor and Deputy Mayor were reelected.
They bring ‘balance’ to the Town Council being female and male, and with one being from the West Bank (Wismar) and the other from the East Bank (Mackenzie).
“I like that kind of balance. I am also satisfied that the process was one of secret balloting… There were a few glitches but they were sorted out,” Sampson declared.
Norris King said, “I think it is a step in the right direction, to give these two young people, who would have been working over the past seven months to be given the opportunity to serve a full term now.
“It would have been unfair to have these two persons that would have served as Mayor and Deputy and without any indictment against them be pushed in a corner and place somebody else there.
“It shows that Lindeners are prepared to support continuity in the political arena, and that as a people we are united and firm.”
Hugh Stephens said, “I think it was very good what happened today. The Mayor and Deputy Mayor are two young people and we have been talking of empowering youths, and they have only served about six months. For most of that time they were taken up with local Government Elections, so I think we should give them some time so that they can succeed.
“I think if they had been removed, it would have been very hurtful and embarrassing to them. I think they will work and serve the community well.”
Overseas based Lindener, Keith Semple also expressed satisfaction that the two officials were returned “to continue the great work that they had started.”
