Four interdicted ranks of the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) who have been implicated in the theft of valuables from the crash –landed Fly Jamaica aircraft, were yesterday released on $100,000 bail each, after being charged with theft and receiving stolen articles.
These charges come weeks after the Fly Jamaica aircraft crash-landed at the Cheddi International Airport (CJIA).
Hauled before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, was Collis Williams, 38, of 14 Coverden, East Bank Demerara. He denied the charge, which stated that on November 2, last at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri, East Bank Demerara, he stole two cellular phones valued at $146,000, property of Basil Ferguson.
It was further alleged that on the same day and at the same location Aubrey Frank, 30, of Soesdyke Linden Highway; Jamie Kingston, 30, of Lodge Georgetown, and Royden Kennedy, 27, of Timehri, East Bank Demerara, had in their control a quantity of articles including perfumes, laptops, chargers and freshener, all suspected to be stolen or unlawfully obtained. The men denied the allegations after they were read to them in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Williams and Frank were represented by Attorney-at- law Clyde Forde, who in an application to secure bail for his clients told the court that his clients have been serving members of the Guyana Fire Service for the past eight and four years respectively.
Kingston was represented by Attorney-at-law Eusi Anderson who told the court that his client has been a fireman for over 11 years and has never been charged before.
Attorney-at-law, George Thomas represented Kennedy, and told the court that his client has been a fireman for the past four years.
Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield told the court that bail should not be granted to the defendants, citing the serious nature of offence and the circumstance in which the offence was committed.
The Magistrate, after listening to both sides, released the men on $100,000 bail each. They were instructed to lodge their passports with the Clerk of Court and report every Friday at the Providence Magistrates’ Courts until the hearing and determination of the trial.
They were all instructed to make their next court appearance on December 12.
Reports indicate that, after the Fly Jamaica plane crashed at CJIA, the firefighters were among the first responders at the scene.
It was reported that soon after, passengers and the pilots discovered some personal articles missing.
Cash, jewellery, tablets, cell phones and colognes, belonging to the pilot, a flight attendant and passengers disappeared from the Fly Jamaica aircraft, which was forced to land at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport. The matter was then reported, an investigation was carried out hence the firefighters were charged for the offence.
