The 14th annual Diamond Mineral Water (DMW) Indoor Hockey Festival was officially launched yesterday afternoon while action in the tournament hit off last night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH).
Five matches were scheduled to take place last evening while another ten matches are lined up on the cards for today, at the same venue.
The competition, which is has been sponsored by Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) since the initial edition in 2004, now has seen the backing of ExxonMobil and Ansa McAl through their Stag Beer brand added to the tournament. DDL remains the title sponsors but will also support the Open men category, while the oil and gas giants
will sponsor the Open women’s category and Stag will be on hand for the over-35 division.
President of the Guyana Hockey Board (GHB), Philip Fernandes, posited during the launch that this year they anticipate the participation of the top players from last year’s Men’s Pan American Champions, Trinidad and Tobago (T&T). The Queens Park Hockey Club (QPHC) from T&T, who were finalists in 2013 and 2016, are defending champions in both the Men’s and Stag Over-35 Divisions.
The side boasts several Trinidadian
national players, including Jordan Reynos, Aiden DeGannes and Jordan Vieira along with several former nationals.
The ExxonMobil Women’s Competition sees the return of the inaugural champions, Magnolias from Trinidad who will be joined by Ventures, also making an appearance after many years.
Meanwhile, the GTT National Champions, the Woodpecker Hikers, will be looking to lead the challenge from Guyana, as will seven-time champions, GBTI GCC along with Old Fort and Saints.
Seven overseas teams will be gracing the competition in this year’s festival, along with the local squad which accumulates a total of 18 teams.
Cash prizes and trophies will be awarded to the winners and runners-up in the male and female and veteran categories. The winning teams in both male and female tournament will each receive USD$1000, while the runners-up will cart off with USD$500.
In last night’s opening action, GBTI GCC began their campaign in a positive note after beating Saints 6-0.
Meanwhile, GCC Vintage pulled off a come from behind win against Old Fort 5-2 in the over-35 veterans
category. However, Old Fort women, who lost to Hikers in the GTT National Championships earlier in the month, defeated their rivals 3-1 in a very commanding display of hockey.
The results of the remaining matches will be featured in a subsequent article.
