Popular President of the Berbice Cricket Board, Hilbert Foster has indicated that he would be willing to serve as President for one more year if he was needed as his first priority is his duty as Secretary/CEO of Guyana’s leading youth and sports organisation, the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club, MS. Foster made the announcement at a meeting at the Port Mourant Ground with players and cricket officials as they waited to take part in the washed out Pepsi 50-Overs Tournament. The Berbice Cricket Board President stated that he made the decision by countless requests from Clubs, Officials, Parents and Umpires who were afraid that the county cricket would once again become dormant, if he left.
Foster, who reluctantly accepted the Presidency on the 18th February, 2018, took over a Board with only $42,000 in its account, while no major Tournament was completed for over two years. The Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club, MS Secretary/CEO stated that the main reason he accepted the position as BCB President was to provide opportunities for youths to fulfill their dreams of playing cricket at the highest level and to use sports as an alternative to a life with Satan. He stated that it was depressing to see youths turning up at practise every day of the week and then have no cricket to play while they were denied opportunities to develop their cricketing skills with no developmental programme.
The Berbice Cricket Board under Foster’s leadership in 2018 has successfully completed 18 cricket Tournaments while another four are awaiting for the finals to be played. A total of twenty six tournaments would have started over the last nine months at the Under-13, Under-15, Under-17, Under-19, Under-21, Internal Zone, Second Division, Double Wicket and First Division levels. Those Tournaments that have not been completed in 2018 would roll over to the New Year. The Berbice Cricket Board has also started early preparation for the 2019 Inter-County Season by securing sponsorship for tournaments at the Under-15, Under-17, Female and Under-19 levels. The Under-15 Tournament for 2019 has already started, while the others would start shortly, weather permitting. Dozens if developmental programmes and award ceremonies have also been organised in an effort to make sure that every talent in the ancient county is identified and nurtured while making sure that every hero is recognized and honoured.
Great effort has also been made to assist clubs with balls, stumps, raincoats, scorebooks, trophies among other items. The Berbice Cricket Board over the last nine months has also launched programmes such as financial stipends for National Junior and Female Cricketers, Inter-county Cap System, Inter-county MVP, Educational Posters among others. The Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club, MS has pumped over $1.5M if its own funds to assist the Berbice Cricket Board to fulfill its mandate over the last nine months.
Foster urged the players and officials to remain focused on the task ahead as much work needed to be done. He stated that if re-elected, he would work along with others to identify a leader of the future and also serve as a mentor. He stated that while it may be difficult to match the achievements in 2018, 2019 promises to be even better as many more sponsors are willing to come on board once he remains at the helm. This would result in more tournaments and developmental programmes. Special effort would be make also to play a Round Robin Two-Days First Division Tournament and obtain a modern indoor cricket facility for the county cricketers. Foster was quick to point out that he had received cooperation from everyone in the county, including clubs who had voted against him at the election. Every committment and promise had also been fulfilled as he strongly believed that his word/promise is his bond.
