With more than 15,000 new cases of the HIV infection being detected in the Caribbean region in just 2017, the United Nation’s Programme on AIDS (UNAIDS) strategic action plan to eradicate the ill is becoming even more crucial.
Guyana in agreeing to UNAIDS three-year HIV/AIDS strategic plan, is on track to the programmes goal of eradicating AIDS by 2030. The National AIDS Programme Secretariat (NAPS) and the Ministry of Public Health has implemented a plethora of measures that will place Guyana on par for the measures required by UNAID.
UNAID’s 90-90-90 plan to combat the prevalence of AIDS within the region is geared toward three major goals by the year 2020.
Guyana as well as the Caribbean region in its entirety has been plagued with the ill that is HIV/AIDS for quite some time. In fact, the prevalence of the disease has ranked the region as second highest after Sub- Saharan Africa according to UNAID.
UNAID’S 90-90-90 action plan encompasses the achievement of three major goals, with them being by 2020, ninety percent of all people living with HIV will know their status, will receive antiretroviral therapy and once accessing treatment will have viral suppression.
In accordance to this plan, the Ministry and NAPS have implemented various measures to work towards the goals of the strategy. The collaborative effort of NAPS and MOPH’s launch of the “Know your status” campaign is just one of the major steps towards achieving the programme’s first goal of having 90 percent of persons living with HIV know their status by 2020.
To achieve the second goal of having 90 percent of persons with the disease access treatment, strides have been made to end the stigma that often deters persons from seeking treatment for the disease.
It was identified that in order to achieve this goal, efforts would have to be made to end the stigma that often comes with disease. MOPH has implemented a litany of measures that is expected to combat this issue.
Medical cards that are usually issued to patients would now have neutral covers, with the patient information being secluded within, as to detach any stigma that would deter individuals from seeking treatment.
Furthermore, efforts are also being made to achieve the programme’s third goal of having patients who are on antiretroviral treatment have viral suppression. This is being achieved by raising awareness on the importance of treatment as well as normalizing it so that patients would be consistent.
UNAID’s strategic action plan aims to have an HIV free region by 2030.
