The National Schools’ Track and Field Championships resumed yesterday at the National Track and Field Center (NTFC), Leonora after it had a break for the swimming and cycling championships that were competed at the National Aquatic Center and the National Park, respectively, on Monday.
Yesterday’s proceedings were dominated with field events and heats in the more subscribed track events.
In long jump, President’s College’s Annalisa Barclay (district 4), who set a long jump record in the girls’ under-16 last year, continued her leaping excellence in the under-18 category after winning with an impressive distance of 5.02 meters. Finishing with the silver was Tatyana Duncan of district 14 with 4.65 meters, while Jasmaine Assanah of district 12 finished with bronze after recording a distance of 4.60 meters.
Meanwhile, Prudence Codrington of South Georgetown (district 13) broke the girls’ Open Javelin record after recording 35.38 meters in her first attempt. Codrington was in a league of her own as silver medalist in the event Denita Marks registered a distance of 18.99 meters, while Miriam Primo’s best attempt of 18.33 meters landed her in the third position.
Among the confirmed winners of the track finals that were ran off yesterday were John Henry in the boys’ under-12 1200m in a time of 3minutes 35 seconds, Tiana Springer in the girls’ under-12 1000m with a time of 3minutes 31 seconds, and Akeela Dover in the girls’ under-10 800m.
The official points standing after three days’ of competition was unavailable up to press time.
The track and field championship resumes today with finals in the 100m and 800m events.
Annalisa Barclay that won the under-16 long jump last year, found glory again this year in the under-18 category.
