Seventeen-year-old Amy Grant and her North Georgetown (district 11) team mate 14-year-old Leon Seaton won three Gold Medals, while 12-year-old Aleka Persuad swam the fastest time of the championships when she finished the Girls U-14, 50 meters Freestyle in 28.68.
According to President of the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) Ivan Persaud his daughter’s time is the unofficial record for the fast time by a Guyanese in any Girls’ 50 meters Freestyle race, bettering the 28.74 registered by Britney Van Lang.
While North GT continues to dominate, East Georgetown finished third which emphasises the fact that technique and proper facilities could easily override natural talent since the City teams with Guyana’s only International Swimming pool on the East Coast and several other Pools were better in terms of technique, especially turning off the wall.
The Hinterland Swimmers learn to swim before they can walk and love the water but their training ground is Rivers and Creeks since they are no state of the art pools or Coaches resulting in mostly Amerindian youngsters lacking enough pool time when they get to Georgetown before the Championship commence.
The qualifying time for the Olympics in 50-meter freestyle is 23.16 for Boys and 26 seconds for Girls and no Guyanese has ever reached those times with the last Guyanese Swimming to participate in the Olympics, getting there as a ‘Wild Card’.
On face of it, Persuad, with at time of 28.68 and with the rule that, despite how fast you swim nobody under the age of 15 can be an Olympian, seems Guyana’s best bet among the females.
But realistically that is not so since it can take as long as two years to shave off a second from your time and the fact that Swimming like all other sports struggle for funding from Government and the Corporate Community making it hard for local teams to be consistently successful at the international level.
Both the past and present Government, gives the impression that developing and funding Sports in Guyana is the least most important issue on their agendas.
