-three Berbice ranks questioned about ganja allegedly taken from crashed car
Band concerts by the Guyana Police Force have become a popular feature of Christmas, but those concerts appear to be in doubt this year.
That’s because several members of the renowned Guyana Police Force Band are under close arrest for allegedly stealing a number of model planes during the recent hosting of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Air transport meeting.
Police, responding to a Kaieteur News story, stated that “a thorough investigation was conducted by members of the Criminal Investigation Department, during which eight members of the Police Band were placed under close arrest.”
The case file has since been dispatched as police seek legal advice.
The planes were among others on display last week at the Arthur Chung Convention Centre, where Guyana was hosting the 2018 International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Air transport meeting.
It is believed that the band members swiped the planes while performing at a cocktail at the same Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara venue.
A lance corporal is among the detained ranks.
Some of the policemen are said to have told investigators they planned to give their nephews and other young relatives the items for Christmas.
Kaieteur News understands officials only realised that the planes were missing when the event ended. According to a source, the ranks initially denied stealing the models.
However, footage from the security cameras reportedly showed some of the band members removing the expensive models.
But even as the band members await their fate, police officials have launched an investigation into another scandal.
Crime Chief Lyndon Alves confirmed, yesterday, that three ranks from West Berbice are being questioned about the alleged theft of marijuana from a recently impounded vehicle.
On November 17, a taxi driver abandoned his car on the Number Six Public Road, West Coast Berbice after crashing into the rear of another vehicle.
Police announced that they found 47 pounds of compressed marijuana stashed inside the suspect’s car.
But police officials were subsequently informed that the ranks who responded to the accident made off with some of the parcels.
The matter is being investigated at CID Headquarters, Eve Leary. The ranks under investigation are being kept at the Tactical Services Unit (TSU).
