A brilliant innings of 88 by Captain Garfield Benjamin and destructive bowling by medium pacer Bryon Persaud and left arm spinner Simon Naidu spearheaded the New Amsterdam Technical Institute to a crushing 173 runs victory over Lower Corentyne Secondary School in the Final of the Berbice Cricket Board organised Mogu Mogu Region 6 Inter-Secondary School Cricket Tournament. The Region 6 Final is the first of three finals that would be played, with the Region 5 Final played next and then the overall Berbice Championship.
In bright sunshine and a sizeable crowd at the venue, Lower Corentyne Secondary School won the toss and elected to bowl. They lost opener R. Ramkishun for 04, caught by Vijay Gopilall off Tameshwar Mahadeo in the fourth over at 26 for 1. Garfield Benjamin and Brandon Stuart joined forces after Keith Simpson was bowled by Neil Tilkuram for 12 at 60 for 2. The pair added 103 for the 3rd wicket with Stuart contributing 40, which included only one boundary. Stephen Kamuladin supported with 21 down the order and Winston Roberts 12 not out. Benjamin was fifth out for 88 when he mishit thirteen years of offspinner Damien Cecil to be caught on the midwicket boundary by Jeremiah Felix. NATI ended on 223 for 7 off their allotted 30 Overs. Damien Cecil took 2 wickets for 34 runs, while offspinner Vijay Gopilall claimed 2 for 35 from five overs.
Needing to score 224 from 30 overs to win the Title, Lower Corentyne Secondary were never in contention as medium pacer Bryon Persaud bowled with a lot of bounce to leave them reeling at 17 for 4 in the 5th over. Among his victims were the promising Leon Cecil, who was caught at cover for 07. Apart from Neil Tilkuram who top scored with 10, no other Lower Corentyne Secondary batsman reached double figures. Persaud took 4 for 22 from six impressive overs, while Naidu, who is also the Asst Secretary/CEO of the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club, MS took 4 for 19 from six overs. Benjamin was named Man of the Finals for his majestic innings which included five massive sixes and four boundaries.
BCB President Hilbert Foster hailed the Region 6 Tournament as an overwhelming success and congratulated NATI on being crowned the Champion School for the Region. The Tournament started with seventeen Secondary Schools and two Technical Institutes. The Region 5 segment of the Tournament has nine Secondary Schools and this would be completed shortly. One School would be crowned Region 5 Champion before going on to clash with NATI for the rights to be called Berbice Secondary School Champion. Foster hailed the contribution of Sueria Manufacturing and its CEO Frank Sancharia towards the development of Berbice Cricket. The Company also sponsored four Sub-Association 20/20 Cricket Tournament under the Magic Moments brand. Foster pledged to the youths, that as long as he remains President of the Berbice Cricket Board, Cricket would be played at all levels in the Ancient County and that Berbice would be the envy of every Cricket Association in the Caribbean.
The Berbice Cricket Board in 2018 has started over twenty five Cricket Tournaments, completed eighteen on to the 23rd November, 2018 and in December, 2018, would be launching the 2019 Under-17 and Under-19 Tournaments.
