Would You Believe It! The villagers of Ann’s Grove /Two Friends are perplexed and bereaved. They are in a huge struggle to bury their loved ones. This is because of greed, wickedness, bribery, weak administration, square pegs in round holes, corruption, and lawlessness.
There is also inefficiency on the part of persons, who lack vision and are void of understanding and have no knowledge of their duties and functions. What a shame and embarrassment.
Let us highlight and bring to your attention the facts:
On 28th of April 1849, after slavery was abolished, seventy-eight former (78) slaves co-operatively pooled their hard earned resources and purchased plantation Two Friends.
One week later, on 5th of May 1849, they once again co-operatively pooled their hard earned resources and purchased plantation Ann’s Grove setting aside portion of lands for housing, farming, cemetery, churches, pasturage, recreational facilities and future development, etc.
In 1973 because of the growing population and less interest in cattle and livestock rearing the portion of land for pasturage was converted to housing.
On the advice of the late Comrade Leader L F S Burnham, former president of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, a portion of the same land was allocated for a cemetery and is stated on the community plan.
Thanks to the late Comrade L F S Burnham and the late Comrade Hubert Sertimer, Chairman of the Ann’s Grove- Two Friends Multi- Purpose Co-op Society and concerned citizens of the community who saw the need for the future.
In the recent times, we have observed that the portion of land that was allocated for the cemetery has been divided into house lots and fenced by rebellious deportees and others, much to the anger and frustration of concerned citizens.
Our questions are:
1. Why has the relevant authority not intervened in this preposterous and presumptuous act?
2. Where will the occupants of this community be buried?
3. Why greed and covetousness should deprive us a place to bury our loved ones?
4. Has judgment fled to brutish beast and men have lost their senses of reasoning?
5. Are these rebellious deportees the only descendants of the 78 former slaves who co-operatively pooled their resources and purchased this community? And what are their contributions?
In view of the current issues mentioned above, we would like the public to take serious note of the present state of the existing condition of the cemetery and determine if it is fitting to convert the plot to house lots, a plot that which was rightfully left for a particular purpose or to retain that plot, which was designated for the decent burial of member of our beloved Community.
Come on people sound your voices and let good sense prevail and avoid such an atrocious act by those without any sense of decency, something that is inconsistent with human behaviour pattern.
Death is inevitable; a cemetery is necessary think of it! Concern Citizens of Ann’s Grove / Two Friends.
