GCC and Police will battle each other this weekend at Bourda in the GCA’s Noble House Seafoods two-day Second Division Final after their rain-hit semi-finals ended in draws yesterday.
At Bourda, GCC set 212 for first innings points after MSC declared on their overnight 211-5 when play started at 14:45hrs due to early morning showers, held on for a draw in the overcast conditions as they struggled to 77-7 from 36 overs when the Umpires lifted the bails at 17:00 hrs yesterday in fading light.
Only Marlon Persaud (22) reached 15 as MSC Skipper Nkosie Barker, who bowled a bit too defensively, had 4-17, while pacer Cordell Mars, bowling with lively pace on a flat track, supported with 2-16.
GCC, despite not taking a first innings lead, advanced by virtue of topping their zone.
When play eventually commenced the impressive Mars removed Kemraj Jaikaran (1) at 1-1 before Timothy McCalmont (6) had his off-stumped knocked out by a perfect arm-ball from Barker after he had audaciously hooked Mars for four to leave the hosts on 11-2.
Barker struck again when Deonarine Seegobin (9) was caught at short leg 31-3.
And when Skipper Renaldo Ali-Mohammed brainlessly attempted to go over the top to leg-spinner Wayne Bollers at a time when runs were immaterial to GCC advancing and was caught at mid-on for 14, at 54-4, MSC were back in the fight.
After pulling Bollers twice into the old Kenny Whishart stand, Ali-Mohammed, who was a part of Guyana’s Super50 Squad, threw his wicket away; opening up the game for MSC who needed to bowl out GCC for less than 212 to stand a chance of reaching the final.
With their best batsman out of way, hope was once more injected in the Thomas Lands side and when Mars had Chevam Persaud brilliantly caught at square leg by Kefa Naughton for a duck at 54-6 MSC must have thought the unlikely would become likely.
But that was not to be, as although Barker collected his fourth with GCC on 67-7, Bernard Bailey, followed up his impressive work with the ball in MSC’s innings by curbing his natural aggressive instinct to bat out 38 balls in a responsible unbeaten 12, while Ansuggna Rodrigues (8) survived to the end.
Not a ball was bowled in the other semi-final at Eve Leary yesterday where Police were on 142-4 replying to Everest’s 137.
