A young entrepreneur, Christine Profitt is out to change the image of Agricola, which has gained notoriety over the years, and aims to improve the lives of youths in the East Bank Demerara Community through the launch of her ‘I Can’ project.
“We want to replace some confidence back into young people. We want to instill some positivity as the negativity has drifted them away,” she explained at the launch of her venture.
Profitt said the ‘I Can’ project seeks to reverse the delinquent behaviour of some of the youths through strategic mentorship, networking for change and facilitating job searches and entrepreneurship.
She has consulted with government and non-governmental agencies to develop a strategy to meet the project’s aim of strategic mentorship and networking and mobilizing villagers.
“The two main aims that we have for the ‘I Can’ project are to start the strategic mentorship and networking opportunities that will lead to either job creation, entrepreneurship opportunities or local business development,” Profit said. The young entrepreneur hopes to roll out the strategic mentorship aspect of the Project in 2019.
The second aim is mobilizing the villages to realize, “I can be different from this current situation, I can forge ahead even though I have come out of school some 10-20 years ago, I can talk to someone, I can reach out and ask for help instead of staying where I am, instead of receding in negativity.”
The ‘I Can’ project is part of the innovation projects in 2018 under the US’s Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative.
