Police were up to last night questioning two individuals in connection with the murder of 88-year-old shopkeeper Dhroowah Ramnauth, also known as “Uncle Drup,” who was bound, gagged and bludgeoned in his kitchen on last Friday night.
The pensioner who lives alone at Lot 119 Surat Drive Triumph, East Coast Demerara, where he also operated a shop, is believed to have been murdered between 11:00 hrs and 16:00 hrs on Friday.
One neighbour was in shock as to why anyone would commit such a gruesome act on “Uncle Drup.”
A neighbour found Ramnauth’s body after the pensioner failed to respond to several calls that were made by two friends who usually keep him company in the afternoons.
The neighbour said Ramnauth would usually close his shop around 11:00 hours and reopen at 16:00 hours, but did not do so on Friday, which raised suspicions.
Ramnauth’s neighbour decided to scale the fence to check on him, only to find the pensioner lying motionless on his kitchen
floor, with his hands tied behind his back with a hand towel, while his mouth was tied with a rag. The neighbour immediately called the police.
Police in a statement said the upper flat of the man’s house and the shop were ransacked but they have been unable to determine if anything was taken.
