Guyana Airways Corporation was granted High Court approval to restart operations, and will be operating as the only Guyana-based international airline.
Chief Executive Officer, Colin Abrams, said that he did not expect the ruling but that he welcomes it. The CEO briefed the press on Friday.
When asked when Guyana Airways will begin operations, he said, “We are looking at approximately 90 days before we could be up and running but we need cooperation with our friends across the street at Guyana Civil Aviation Authority.”
He said that the company has a lot to do in the way of preparing its mechanics, pilots and security.
“After those are completed, aircraft contracts, maintenance contracts, then you apply for your [Air Operator Certificate] (AOC).”
He said that the airline will be flying between Barbados, Trinidad and Guyana for now. However, he said that Cuba is a main target for the airline to service in the future.
Abrams said that the airline will play an important role in Guyana, and asked, “Does Guyana have an international airline based in Guyana? No, we don’t have one. There is a major void that needs to be filled.”
Employees of the Guyana Airways Corporation (GAC) were staged at the gate of the Arthur Chung Convention protesting the government for the de-registration of the company from the list, on Wednesday last.
A July order had caused the Deeds and Commercial Registries Authority to de-register the company’s name, arguing that it was identical to that of the former state-owned Guyana Airways.
