Commander of B’ Division, Paul Langevine, yesterday reported that a post mortem examination conducted on the body of Ramlall Bassant, called “Dat”, 65, of lot 12 Goed Bananan Land, East Canje, Berbice, revealed that he died from acute alcohol intoxication or alcohol poisoning.
Acute alcohol intoxication is a condition associated with drinking too much alcohol in a short time. It affects body temperature, breathing, heart rate, and gag reflex. It can also sometimes lead to coma or death.
Bassant’s body was found face up with his pants dropped to his knees, his legs crossed and apparent blood stains on his buttocks. There were also some scratches about his body.
However, Langevine told the media when asked if the autopsy revealed any sexually assault, he stated, “No I didn’t get any information to suggest that.”
He was also asked to confirm whether there was blood found on Bassant’s body. “I wasn’t so informed,” he responded.
A relative of the man had stated that blood was seen on his buttocks while his mother had also indicated that she saw what appeared to be blood on his hands when she got a glimpse of her son’s body on the dam where he was found by residents living in the area.
The dead man’s mother relayed that a young man showed up at her home and told her, “Dat dead and deh pon the dam.”
“Wan bai kerr meh and when me go me barely get to the see the body but like me notice blood pon he hands.” She stated that the last time she saw him was the previous night (Thursday night) but “he is a man does walk and stray a lot so me na really worry”.
Ramlall was described as an alcoholic by his relatives. He was also unemployed and depended on his mother to take care of him.
