After a number of years without a cricket club or much organised sporting activities in the Edinburgh East Bank, Berbice area, youths as well as residents are now high in praise for an overseas based Guyanese couple who have returned to take up residence.
Mr. Egbert Lyken-Edwards and his wife Maureen Lyken-Edwards have taken it upon themselves to resuscitate the Edinburgh Cricket Club which has renamed the Edinburgh Warriors Cricket Club (EWCC) on September 9, last.
Mr. Lyken-Edwards, a new resident of Edinburgh Scheme was on his way to a shop in the community when he saw about eight youths playing cricket at the New Doe Park Field. HE said that he approached the youths to find out what the situation was with the club, they told him that there was no cricket club for at least 3 years and his response was to meet him at the ground the next day.
Eager to hear what was on offer, fourteen (14) youths turned up and Mr. Lyken-Edwards had a discussion with them to find out if they were interested in starting a cricket club, they were very keen.
The club progressed from there and by Friday September 14 the club had already registered over 40 youngsters. As the word began to spread more youths turned up and within a short space of two months, over 70 persons have registered with the club.
During further discussions with the youths who were now calling him ‘Coach’, Mr. Lyken-Edwards was informed of some former members of the Old Edinburgh club who soon came on board. Those members roped in others who also helped with the coaching.
Although the club was previously known as Edinburgh CC, the youths were given the option to choose a name for the new club and it was decide to add Warriors to the name. The club has since grown rapidly and now has Under-15, 17 and 19 squads as well as a 2nd Division team which has so far played five matches in the ongoing NBS 40-overs competition. The U15’s are also competing in the Mike’s Pharmacy tournament.
Since its resuscitation, the club has been seeking donations and sponsorship from local businesses around and furthered afield in Georgetown. They have so far gotten a few positive responses.
The Lyken- Edwards feel that finding things for the youths to do will keep them gainfully occupied and focused. It will also keep them away from the many distractions permeating society.
Club members are also participating in other activities including football, cycling, athletics and softball cricket.
