Government is moving to use an existing fibre optic cable that has already been strung along the coastland to connect Demerara to Berbice.
Yesterday, the National Data Management Authority (NDMA) started inviting contractors to bid for the “Interconnect to GPL Fibre along the Eastern Corridor and Delivery of Fibre Connectivity to New Amsterdam”.
The closing date for bids is December 11, 2018, while NDMA, a government agency mandated to connect state entities into a network, did not
immediately offer any additional disclosures yesterday, it will be recalled that the GPL transmission lines were commissioned in early 2015.
The new power transmission lines run from West Demerara, across the river, along the coast to Berbice. It is built-in with fibre, which could be connected to transmit data.
However, until now, there has not been a clear policy about how exactly the GPL cable would have been used.
The US$42M upgrade to GPL had been for a project that included seven sub-stations and new high power transmission lines. GPL had said that the fibre optic cable will be used for communication for the SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition Systems) operations.
