A farmer who the court heard live on a small island in the Pomeroon River was yesterday charged and remanded to prison after he was allegedly found with five pounds of cocaine at his premises.
Wayne Correia, 37, of Pomeroon, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Correia pleaded not guilty to the charge, which alleged that on November 20, last at Pomeroon, he had in his possession 2.2 kilograms of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
Correia was represented by Attorney-at-law Stanley Moore, who in a bail application for his client, told the court that Correia lives along the Pomeroon River and multiple persons have access to his premises, since it is a gateway for persons to access to the Pomeroon River.
The lawyer added that his client has never been charged before and bail should be granted to him.
Moore further argued that when the allegation was put to his client, he denied same, since the narcotics were not found in his possession.
Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield told the court that ranks from the narcotics branch attached to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), acting on information, proceeded to Correia’s residence.
The Prosecutor further related that Correia lives on a small island in the Pomeroon River, which is only accessible by boat.
He said that the ranks on arrival at the island made contact with Correia who was the lone occupant at the premises.
A search was then conducted in and around the premises and a wooden box was observed in a workshop. Checks were conducted on the box and a quantity of cocaine was unearthed.
A further search was carried out around the premises and the ranks unearthed another set of cocaine in a plastic cooler, which was under the house.
Correia was then arrested, and told of the offence to which he denied. He was taken into custody and placed before the court.
The Prosecutor made serious objections to bail being granted to Correia citing the prevalence of the offence and the penalty it attracts.
The Chief Magistrate after listening to the Prosecution’s facts remanded Correia.
He was instructed to make his next court appearance on December 10 at the Charity Magistrate’s Court.
