Police in Berbice are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 65-year-old man of Goed Bananen Land, East Canje,
Berbice, after his body was found along a dam in the said village with the pants down and apparent marks of violence about the body.
Dead is Ramlall “Dat” Bassant of Lot 12 Goed Bananen Land, East Canje, Berbice. Bassant’s body was reportedly found facing upward with the legs crossed and his pants dropped to his knees. Minor wounds were seen about his body.
His sister, Chandra Khali Bassant, 55, told Kaieteur News that when she received the message, she called her sister-in-law who confirmed that “he was found dead”. She immediately ventured to her brother’s residence, where he lived with his 84-year-old mother Lilian Bassant.
The sister added that from there, she proceeded to the scene where her brother’s body was found, a street away, lying on the dam. She was however stopped by the police from viewing the body since they had already begun investigations.
“They told me I can’t see him, I can’t go closer, but the hearse come lil bit after and dem put he in the hearse and dem carry him away. I only got a
glimpse of his body”, she said.
The dead man’s mother related that a young man showed up at her home yesterday morning and told her “Dat dead and deh pon the dam and when me go, me barely get to the see the body, but like me notice blood pon he hands lil”. She stated that the last time she saw him was the previous night (Thursday night) but “he is a man does walk and stray a lot, so me na really worry”.
Ramlall was described as a heavy drinker by his relatives, but was never involved in any issues with anyone. He was unemployed for a period up until the time of his death and depended on his mother to take care of him.
Meanwhile, the police within the area are currently questioning persons, and sourcing surveillance footage from nearby surroundings as part of their probe. No one has been arrested.
