Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Mrs. Shalimar Ali-Hack, will be launching a Prosecutors’ Code for all prosecutors, next week Tuesday, at the Pegasus Hotel.
The Prosecutors’ Code was drafted in collaboration with the United Nations Anti- Corruption (UNODC) and sets out the tests that all prosecutors in Guyana, including police prosecutors from the Guyana Police Force will be expected to apply in determining whether criminal charges should be instituted.
A similar Code has already been implemented in the Caribbean Islands of Antigua and Barbuda, St. Kitts and Nevis, Barbados, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, St. Lucia and Dominica.
This initiative aims to implement uniformity in the institution of criminal charges in order to ensure fairness to accused persons while balancing the public interest.
Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo will deliver opening remarks, while Chancellor of the Judiciary Justice Yonette Cummings-Edwards and Commissioner of Police Leslie James have also been invited to make remarks. The DPP will give an overview of the Code. The event convenes at 09:00hrs.
