DEAR EDITOR,
On November 13th 2018, the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) ruled in favour of the cross-dressing Appeal. The Court ruled that “a law in Guyana, which makes it a criminal offence for a man or a woman to appear in a public place while dressed in clothing of the opposite sex for an “improper purpose”, is unconstitutional. The law, Section 153(1)(xlvii) of the Summary Jurisdiction (Offences) Act, is to be struck from the laws of Guyana.”
‘’The landmark ruling means it is now acceptable for men to dress as women in Guyana.’’
Here we have the Caribbean Court of Justice trying to delete and obliterate the laws of Guyana from our Constitution and very soon we won’t have any laws of Guyana left. I have many concerns here about this High Court ruling which I find very wicked and evil.
When we were born, our births are registered by our parents as Male or Female. At the passport office, the form has to state if the applicant is either a Male or Female. We are registered at GECOM as a Male or Female. A Police clearance also states such a fact and the police want to know if an applicant is a male or female.
With this law that now advocates for a man to dress like a woman and a woman to carry herself like a man is totally against our constitution. The laws in our country and any country in the world wants to know our gender.
If I were to wear a woman’s dress and go to the Police Headquarters for a Police Clearance I will be mocked by the public and will be asked to leave. The same will happen at GPOC for a Birth Certificate; the same at the immigration at Embassies of the world.
Even if a man is dressed as a woman, the immigration forms don’t have a place for a ‘’transgender’’. If he/she pretends to be one or a gay or lesbian, they either have to state on the form if they are Male or Female. It’s more than ridiculous for a man to try to be a woman dressed in ladies attire.
Let’s assess this cross-dressing law…if this is what we are going to live by since the Caribbean Court of Justice is trying to obliterate our Constitution. Here a criminal dresses like a woman commits a robbery or a murder, but dresses back like a man and cannot be identified as a male but as a woman who commits a robbery.
These things happen all the time. A man dresses like a woman and even has a female name, he can even rob a bank, a store, a person, and no one knows his identity.
Is this the law we want live by?
A woman also dresses like a man to commit robberies and cannot be identified. If this law is passed here into motion it means you can dress your son in a female uniform and send him to school. You can dress your daughter as a male in a male uniform and send her to school and the teachers cannot say anything because ‘’This is the law we are living by’’.
This is more than ridiculous. I am calling on all our churches, religious organizations, members of parliament to denounce this rule by the CCJ.
Regards,
Rev. Gideon Cecil
