Chef, Hosiana Moses, found himself boiling in a pot of hot water as he stood before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman yesterday, in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts to answer to a charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
Moses pleaded guilty and offered to explain what led to the charge which alleged that between November 14, 2018 and November 16, 2018 at the Georgetown Public Hospital he had in his possession 888 grams of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
When asked what his explanation was, in a quiet voice Moses responded. “I’m sorry for what happened and it is my mistake.” From his explanation the Magistrate stated that a positive guilty plea should be entered.
Facts of the charge stated that ranks from the narcotics branch of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) attached to the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) intercepted Moses who was an outgoing passenger set for Miami.
A search was conducted on Moses’s person and suitcase and nothing was found. However, based on his suspicious behaviour he was interviewed. He confessed to the ranks that he had swallowed a quantity of cocaine pellets.
Moses was escorted to GPHC where an x-ray was conducted on his body and revealed that he had a quantity of foreign objects in his stomach. He was admitted to the said institution on the 13 November to 16 November where he excreted 89 cocaine pellets.
The pellets were retrieved and Moses was discharged and taken to the CID headquarters narcotics branch where he was shown the pellets. They were weighed in his presence. He was told of the allegation and then arrested. He was asked to give a caution statement in which he admitted to being the owner of the said cocaine.
Attorney-at-law Lami Singh, who represented Moses, informed the court that Moses is 34 years of age. He resides at Fort Street, Kingston, Georgetown. He is the father of one child who is nine months old.
The attorney pleaded that the court express mercy as Moses is the sole bread winner for his home. He went on to say that the court can take into consideration that an early guilty plea was entered and his client would have complied with the police all through the investigation.
After listening to the attorney, Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman considered the evidence provided by the prosecution, the quantity of cocaine involved and to prevent others from trying, she sentenced Moses to four years’ imprisonment and fined him $1,864,000 for the offence.
