Guyana’s Golden Jaguars, in its quest to create history by qualifying for the Concacaf Gold Cup next year will face another hurdle in the journey when they take on home team French Guiana this evening at the Dr Edmard Lama Stadium from 18:30hrs.
A confident Guyana team which enjoyed a few days of training in Suriname before departing for the French nation on Sunday last will fancy their chances of keeping their unbeaten record intact. A win against the Turks and Caicos Islands and a draw in their first match against Barbados here at the Leonora Stadium has placed Guyana in 14th place of the 34 nations contesting this historical tournament.
In a must win situation, the French Guiana unit is in 20th place having won one game and lost the other. While the home crowd will be rooting for their boys, the Golden Jaguars, known warriors, would be going for full points this evening.
Head Coach Michael Johnson offered this comment to Kaieteur Sport yesterday afternoon: “The team are in good spirits and are looking to put in a good strong performance against a French Guiana team that needs to win.”
When asked about a possible starting lineup, Johnson said, “Not yet sure about starters we will look to name the team tomorrow (today) as competition for places has been brilliant.”
Meanwhile, Guyana Football Federation (GFF) President Wayne Forde in an invited comment stated that the staff and players are focused and positive.
”This will be a tough game but I am confident that we have the depth in the squad to come away with a positive result. We have the resolve to rise above our challenges, which are daunting at times but never greater that our collective will to succeed.”
The Squad: Kai McKenzie-Lyle (Goalkeeper), Akel Clarke (Goalkeeper), Terence Vancooten (Defender), Sam Cox (Defender), Kevin Layne (Defender), Kevin Dundas (Defender), Jake Newton (Defender), Walter Moore (Defender), Colin Nelson (Defender), Ronayne Marsh-Brown (Defender), Neil Danns (Midfielder), Elliot Bonds (Midfielder), Brandon Beresford (Midfielder), Anthony Benfield (Midfielder), Daniel Wilson (Midfielder), Stephen Duke-McKenna (Midfielder), Emery Welshman (Forward), Marcel Barrington (Forward), Trayon Bobb (Forward), Kadell Daniel (Forward), Sheldon Holder (Forward).
