The 30-year-old labourer who was allegedly stabbed by 16-year-old O’Neil Welch, of Auchlyne Village, Corentyne, Berbice died from shock and haemorrhage due to a stab wound to the heart. This was confirmed by a police source in Berbice after several calls to the Commander Paul Langevine went unanswered and the officer in charge of crime Chabinauth Singh indicated that he “does not have it” and that he is unsure if an autopsy was conducted.
However, the post mortem was done by a government pathologist yesterday afternoon.
Kaieteur News understands that a file that was compiled by investigating ranks was sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions for advice.
Initial reports are that O’Neil Welch and Desmond Sewdath, called “Bull”, were both under the influence when an argument erupted between the two at a nearby shop in Auchlyne Village. There, armed with a knife, the teen charged towards the labourer and stabbed him, killing him instantly. He then escaped and went home.
Brother of the deceased, Tony Sewdath, had stated that he last saw his brother at Auchlyne village with some of his friends, including the teenager, before he left to go fishing, around 14:45 hrs. They were imbibing.
The teenager, he said, had a knife with him “breaking ice” but he was worried since according to him, his now dead brother and suspect had argued a few weeks ago and the teenager had threatened to stab him.
“I tell him to come out the shop and go home but he na listen so I go away to backdam to fish”, he added.
A half hour later after returning from the backdam, a cousin met him along the public road and informed him that his brother was killed. He revealed that the teenager who is known to “smoke up” appeared to be under the influence of the drug at the time while he was at the shop.
Meanwhile, the suspect’s mother, Ulex Welch, said that she was closing off her day of selling some time around 17:30 hrs when her daughter ran to her breathless through the Rose Hall Town Arch road and kept shouting, “Mommy, pack up, pack up”.
She stated that she immediately summoned a hire car that was in the vicinity of her vending stall and with her daughter entered the car.
The woman explained that earlier that day her son asked her for $200 and she warned him “not to go and hang out with dem boys”.
She stated that the deceased and her son worked together as the village garbage collectors and she was not aware that there was a previous argument between the two some weeks ago where he allegedly threatened to stab Sewdath.
