Dear Editor,
Braving scattered showers, residents of C Field Sophia and neighbouring environs on the 17th of November 2018 converged on the C Field Playground for a Love and Unity Rally hosted by the APNU+AFC political parties.
The rally began at 18:30 hrs and was hosted by Minister of Public Health and Chairman of the PNCR Mrs. Volda Lawrence, and Chairman of the Guyana Youth and Student Movement Mr. Ryan Belgrave.
Earlier in the day, members of the PNCR Georgetown District including Mayor Patricia Chase-Green and Councillor Lyndon Hicks did a walkabout to listen to the concerns of residents of C, D and E Fields and performed clean up exercises in the area.
Simultaneously, Minister within the Ministry of Natural Resources Ms. Simona Broomes, in collaboration with the Guyana Police Force and residents of A Field Sophia conducted a cleanup exercise on a plot of land in the area, which would be converted into a play space for young men who had to resort to playing football on the road.
Both efforts were lauded by the residents and they were entirely involved throughout the day on both projects.
Back to the Rally, the top brass of the APNU+AFC was present and they did not disappoint. Chairman of the PNCR and Minister of Public Health Volda Ann Lawrence; General Secretary of APNU and Minister of State, Joseph Harmon; General Secretary of the PNCR and Minister of Social Protection, Amna Ally; Principal Political Secretary of the PNCR and Minister of Public Affairs Dawn Hastings; Treasurer of the PNCR and Minister of Communities Ronald Bulkan; General Secretary of AFC Marlon Williams; Member of Parliament APNU Jermaine Figueira; MP Member of Parliament APNU John Adams; Chairman of the GYSM Ryan Belgrave; Councillor in waiting Pandit Ubraj Narine, AFC Executive Member Arnold Sukraj; all gave inspiring speeches, which left the audience cheering shouting dancing and laughing.
It was a festive atmosphere as Eddie Neblett’s Love and Unity rang through the cool night. This is a first in a series of public meetings by the APNU+AFC in which it seeks to reconnect and energize its base. Minister Lawrence focused on the development in the pipelines and informed the attentive audience that Sophia can expect a hospital soon.
Furthermore, she said, every Guyanese will have a first class health facility less than five kilometers from their home.
Minister Harmon particularly stressed that the proceeds from oil will go primarily to the agricultural, education, health and infrastructure sectors.
Minister Ally’s presentation reminded Sophians that prior to 2015, they were abandoned by the PPPC, now one can easily drive from A to B to C to D to E on good roads.
AFC General Secretary Marlon Williams urged the residents to take elections seriously and do not waste their votes by staying home or voting for the Opposition. Minister Dawn Hastings took the Opposition Leader to task over his ill-conceived No Confidence Motion stating that his motion seeks to question a government, which corrected the wrongs of the PPPC wrongs such as the phantom squads, the rampant corruption and discrimination.
Pandit Ubraj Narine blasted the People’s Progressive Party as a party that only appeals to race and he was proud to be a Guyanese who belongs to a party that advances the Guyanese identity and not a racial identity.
At the close of the rally, the speakers on stage held hands including the attendees and sang lustily to ‘Love and Unity Peace and Harmony’.
