Released from a juvenile detention centre just months ago, a 16-year-old boy is now likely to face a murder charge after stabbing a labourer to death.
The youth, from Auchlyne, Corentyne, Berbice, plunged a knife into the chest of 30-year-old Desmond Sewdath, called “Bull,” in full view of several villagers, at around 15:00 hrs on Saturday.
The killing occurred at a shop at which alleged killer and victim were drinking.
The young school drop-out fled the scene, but his mother, a clothes and fruit vendor, turned him over to the police.
Reports are that the teen and Sewdath, who both work as garbage collectors, were intoxicated when an argument ensued.
The teen, who had a knife, stabbed Sewdath in the chest, killing him instantly before escaping.
A brother of the slain man said he last saw his sibling at Auchlyne village with the suspect and others.
He recalled that the men were imbibing. The teenager had a knife with which he was “breaking ice.”
However, the brother said that he was worried since, according to him, his brother and the lad had argued a few weeks ago and the teenager had threatened to stab him.
“I tell he to come out the shop and go home but he na listen, I go away to back dam to fish”, he added.
A half hour later after returning from the back dam, a cousin met him along the public road and informed him that his brother was dead.
“She tell me seh, some bai stab he. When me go Auchlyne, me see the blood on the ground but dem bin already carry he away to the mortuary”.
He revealed that the teenager who is known to “smoke up” appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
Meanwhile, the suspect’s mother told Kaieteur News that she had just finished selling at around 17:30 hrs when her daughter ran to her breathless at the Rose Hall Town Arch road and kept shouting “mommy, pack up, pack up”. She stated that she immediately caught a hire car.
“Is when we deh in the car, meh daughter telling me what happened.”
She later turned her son over the police that very day.
The woman explained that earlier that day her son asked her for $200 and she warned him “not to go and hang out with dem boys.”
She stated that the victim and her son worked together as garbage collectors and she was not aware that there was a dispute.
His mother who has three other children has been running her home single-handedly since the death of the suspect’s father.
Her son was sent to the juvenile detention centre where he spent a few months during this year and was later released.
