Devine’s 22-ball fifty sees Ireland wrap winless campaign

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – Minnows Ireland ended their ICC Women’s Twenty20 World Cup campaign winless as New Zealand beat them by seven wickets in the final Group B preliminary match here Saturday.
Playing at the Guyana National Stadium, the Irish were held to a paltry 79 for nine off their 20 overs, despite Gaby Lewis’s 39 from 36 balls with five fours.
Ireland promised more at 69 for three in the 15th over, following a 39-run, fourth wicket stand between Lewis and Laura Delany (12), but lost six wickets for nine runs in the space of 21 deliveries.
Off-spinner Leigh Kasperek, who was handed the new ball, wrecked the innings with three for 19 while seamer Lea Tahuhu (2-27) and 18-year-old leg-spinner Amelia Kerr (2-18) also chipped in with key spells.
In reply, the already eliminated New Zealand made light work of their target, getting home in the eighth over behind opener Sophie Devine’s 22-ball 51.
She put on 69 off 32 balls with Suzie Bates (11), slamming seven fours and three sixes in an exhilarating innings, before slicing seamer Delany to point to depart in the sixth over.
New Zealand finished third as unbeaten India topped the group with three-time champions Australia in second spot.
