144 graduate from the Essequibo Technical Institute
The Essequibo Technical Institute has produced yet another batch of fine students, following the institutions 16th graduation last Thursday evening. The graduating class of 2018 included 144 students who would’ve completed courses in Data operation, General Office Administration, Diploma in Commerce, electrical installation, Furniture Making, Motor vehicle engine system and welding.
The Essequibo Technical Institute was established in June 2000 by the government through the Ministry of Education. On March 12, last, the institution for the first time, opened its door to 160 students.
Today the Essequibo Technical Institute also extends its training to students in Regions One, Seven and Eight.
The principal, Rawle Pearce, said during his report, that technical and vocational education is of great importance, especially since there are in Guyana emerging industries associated with oil, gas and mining.
He explained, “In Guyana we need to recognize the tremendous potential of technical and vocational education. We need to understand that the only way a child can easily be absorbed into the market is through technical and vocational education.”
According to Pearce, in the coming months the institution will undergo a unique rebranding. He explained that the institution will soon sign the higher educational curriculum on engineering and mining agreement. 
The principal added, “We will soon see the incorporation and development of programmes in the oil and gas industry; in mining and engineering… Today we have entered into an agreement with the Guyana Power and Light [GPL] to provide six technicians for the new power plant in Anna Regina during the coming weeks.”
According to Pearce, the training director of MACORP has already indicated a willingness to accept trainees from Bartica, Port Kaituma and Mabaruma into their operations of diesel engines. He said that as of next week, identified candidates will begin the apprenticeship programme with the company. “MACORP will be making a big investment into ETI this coming term. It will be sponsoring full scholarships for all Port Kaituma, Mabaruma and Bartica students for one year.”
This publication understands that this year, the institution would have been able to reduce the dropout rate to less than 12%; as compared to a massive 59% in 2017.
The Chairman of the ETI board, Mr. Deleep Singh, said that overtime there has been an increase in enrollment at the institution. It is anticipated that the enrollment will soon increase, since the yet to be commissioned new dormitory wing will accommodate about 32 students.
