Dear Editor,
Local Government Elections are over and according to reports; all went well in all the constituencies. The state owned Guyana Chronicle dubbed this election a “victory for democracy,” among other platitudes coming from the government side and most of all, there was no violence this LGE.
The last item mentioned is a very significant factor on a Guyana landscape when any election comes around, that is, the all pervasive violence and fear. This is a well-known fact permanently etched on our memories of all elections in this country, and to have one that is incident free is a commendable act on their part or so it seems.
But, I will say this; no one is impressed by the PNC where violence is concerned. That is their trump card; it is a major weapon in their arsenal to gain power and control. So, to have a violence free election is just another gimmick to lift up clean hands.
In this election, the violence factor was noticeably absent for obvious reasons, as one PNC supporter proudly reported, “Every election y’all does accuse The PNC of violence. Wuh you gon say now?”
The point is that the election was held with the unilaterally appointed Patterson and the heavily lopsided Afro-centric, PNC-dominated, GECOM. Nothing untoward has happened so far.
The PNC would have opined that they try to run a clean election process at LGE and put up a front of being a good and transparent government so that when the rigging comes in 2020 no one should say that any fraud was committed.
Instead, they would have surmised that the talk should be that the PPP/C are bad losers. Here is it we ran a so-called clean election in 2018 and now the PPP/C is accusing them of rigging in 2020. This is also another trick to gain approval of the international community.
But this is my point. LGE is not, and I repeat, is not a general election. The PPP/C has won by a wide margin tantamount to a landslide – whichever way you look at it – but the fact remains the same. The PNC is still in power and that is all that matters for them. The plan is in place, let the PPP/C and Guyana feel good that the dinosaur at GECOM could run a free and fair process and stay put for 2020 and all will be well.
Keep The PPP/C in a stupor and a false hope that The 2020 Elections would be just as good as 2018.
Well, they are ever so wrong because The PPP/C has that court matter in place and Patterson must go. In addition, we The People want a reconstituted GECOM for the 2020 election. We do not trust them and as such, we do not want any election held by The PNC under a unilaterally appointed chairman. We are very clear on this one.
Any backing away from this is tantamount to legitimizing a fraud on the people of this country and we cannot allow this to happen at this crucial time of our history.
Let us not forget that the grand prize is in 2020 when they will be voted out of power. This PNC-led Coalition is not going to leave office under peaceful and legitimate terms.
Respectfully submitted
Neil Adams
