DEAR EDITOR,
The God Almighty was with that Boeing 757, Fly Jamaica (OJ257) flight that left the Cheddi Jagan International Airport Timehri in the wee hours (2.10am) of Friday 9th November, 2018. After about forty-three minutes, the aircraft returned to the airport with hydraulic problems, reportedly signalled by the pilot. The plane crash landed and the First Responders were the Timehri Fire Unit, an arm of the Guyana Fire Service. Passengers and flight crew were all removed safely, while a small number got injured.
We all commend the pilots for handling a technical situation correctly, but Guyana has been stained without any sort of detergent being able to remove it. Firemen were detained for allegedly stealing from a pilot and passengers of the crashed aircraft.
I call upon the Government and the Guyana Fire Service to professionalize the Timehri Fire Unit staff. Eliminate those who need to be removed. I also offer special thanks to the Guyana Police Force, Guyana Defence Force, Airport staff and the New Handling Service for a job well done.
Respectfully,
Parmanand Ram
