Caribbean U-15 Squash Champion Shomari Wilshire made light work of Gianni Carpenter crushing him in straight games on night two the Farfan and Mendes Junior Skill Level Tournament at the Georgetown Club on Wednesday in GSA’s last competition for the year.
Playing in category ‘A’ the 15-year-old Wiltshire barley broke a sweat as he outplayed Gianni Carpenter 11/1, 11/4, 11/1, in a clinical exhibition of high class squash while number 2 seed Samuel Ince-Carvalhal suffered an upset 3-0 loss to Mikey Alphonso also in Category ‘A’.
In a night that saw some surprising results, fans attending witnessed the young competitors battling each other with grit and determination.
In the biggest upset of the night, Alphonso won the first two games 11-6, 11-6 but Ince-Carvalhal fought back gamely in the third before being cut down by the precise shots of the younger player who demonstrated that he is a force to be reckoned with; winning the final game 11-9.
Category ‘B’ saw another upset as Nicholas Verwey came back from a 2/0 deficit against Kirsten Gomes to emerge winner. Gomes dominated for the first two games, securing an 11/8, 11/7 lead, but Verwey refused to give up and came back in the third to leave Gomes on 6 points as he ran away with the game.
Gomes seemed exhausted in the fourth as Verwey moved her around the court to an 11/2 victory before finishing the match 8/11, 7/11, 11/6, 11/2, 11/6. In Category ‘F’, Grant Fenandes won his fourth match of the tournament to remain unbeaten in his group.

Wins for Shriya Persaud and Jane Singh in Category ‘G’ put the girls out in front with their serves and returns showing great promise as they got the better of the boys and will be matched against each other later in the week.
