Dear Editor,
I am horrified by results of the local government elections in Guyana. Thoughts of Phantom squads and theft of national assets trample through my mind. Then I ask myself the hard questions. Will Guyana ever kick racial politics? Will we continue to abort every effort to lift our country into prominence? Will that dream of becoming the bread basket of the region ever be realised?
I had the misfortune of seeing what happened after Desmond Hoyte took the reins of government and swung the national economy upward, but this was short lived after racial politics removed him from office. Will this cycle continue?
Will we continue to remove our great leaders like what was done in 1763? Is there a curse overshadowing this beautiful land?
The discovery of oil in our waters did give much hope that every Guyanese will get an equal chance to a better life, but is it that Guyanese prefer that this newfound riches end up in the hands a just a few?
I ask these questions with much concern, but I know that I am not the only Guyanese. If this is what the people want, then I will have no choice but to postpone my return home.
I love Guyana, but I hate petty racial politics .
