The Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU) will be holding a meeting today at their office on 160 Regent and Shiv Chanderpaul Drive, to hear testimonies from its members concerning the affairs of the Guyana Public Service Cooperative Credit Union (GPSCCU).
First Vice President of GPSU, Dawn Gardner, said at a press conference yesterday that they have received numerous complaints from members of GPSCCU, who are also members of GPSU.
Members have complained that, after having applied to make withdrawals from their special savings, they’ve been made to wait days. She also said that the Interim Management Committee (IMC) installed by the Ministry of Social Protection’s Chief Cooperative Development Officer, has not made visits to any out of town locations.
As a result, persons residing outside of town who are desirous of conducting transactions with the GPSCCU have to travel to Georgetown to apply for and access loans, according to GPSU’s President, Patrick Yarde.
Even after being subjected to this laborious bureaucracy, Gardner said that some members still would be refused loans. As a result, some have opted to resign from the credit union, even though GPSU has continuously implored that they stay.
GPSU said that the inconvenience of the system of the credit union is burdensome for its members, and that it is worsening their economic and emotional challenges.
Yarde said that there is sufficient evidence to confirm the legitimacy of the complaints made by their members. He opined that the actions of the GPSCCU are unenlightened and insensitive, since many of its members depend on their savings and other benefits to be provided, hassle-free. He said that the credit union’s current leadership is well within their means to accede to transactions with members in a much wiser fashion, since he believes they have all the resources they need to do so.
The GPSU said that it will work swiftly, upon receipt of testimonies from its members, to correct the inefficiencies of GPSCCU.
Asked about the alleged inefficiency of the policies of the credit union, President of the GPSCCU, Trevor Benn, told Kaieteur News that the GPSCCU tries to conduct all transactions within a three-day period. He explained that the members are made to wait this period for the processing of transactions because the applications must be presented before the committee who will review, and that the process should be given its due diligence.
Benn said that traveling out of town was not seen as economically feasible, when the committee considered the size of most loans. He said, however, in cases where a member is in dire need, the committee will make exceptions. Further, he added that the issues faced by members are no different from what they were, prior to the installment of the Interim Management Committee.
Benn added that the GPSCCU recently concluded the audit reports for the affairs of the credit union for 2011, 2012 and 2013. He said that the previous leadership, which included Yarde, did not accept the findings of the audits done, so they had refused to conclude the reports. As a result of the completion of these reports, Benn said that the members will soon be paid their interim dividends for those years.
Addressing the current leadership of the GPSU, Benn said that “they miss the proppings of power”, as elements of the leadership of GPSU, including Patrick Yarde, had been responsible for the GPSCCU before the IMC replaced them due to complaints similar to those the GPSU now seeks to address.
