The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) intends to use its increased seats on the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) to ensure that transparency and accountability are returned to the institution that has been marred by corruption scandals over the years.
Making this announcement yesterday was Opposition Leader, Bharrat Jagdeo.
At a press conference held at Freedom House, the former Head of State said that the party’s seven representatives will be calling for a number of things which include audited financial statements on an annual basis and a modernized payment system which would allow citizens to pay their rates and taxes online.
The Opposition Leader said, “Now that we moved from three seats to seven seats, we will push for more accountability at the Council. We will be calling for audited financial statements every year.
“We want every civil work now to be tendered using the National Procurement Act because you have seen how they have not had audited statements for the last three years. They have given out hundreds of millions of dollars in contracts without any form of tendering…we want to correct that.”
Jagdeo continued, “We want them to make the City Council more user friendly to people. So if I am paying taxes, I should be able to go online, type in my name and address and see what my tax liability is.
“I should be able to pay it online too. I will also be talking to our seven councilors to push for these things and to accelerate the process of allowing businesses to construct buildings in the city.”
The former head of State added, “Our Councilors will also call for there to be a review of all of the expenditure now to look at the impact on people because you can’t have them funding the former Mayor and giving him seven security guards and the City Council is paying for it up to now.
“Or the current Mayor has more security than the President…We can’t have that. They will also vote against any attempt to resurrect the parking meter contract.”
The Opposition Leader said that these are the main issues which the PPP Councilors will be pushing to ensure accountability is returned to the City Council.
